童子就是侍童，照顾主人起居生活为主，和专门来拜师学艺的徒弟不同，因此在此诗中，“师”当作主人更为合适。
下问童子，言师采药去。 只在此山中，云深不知处。
贾岛诗《访隐者不遇》，“松下问童子，言师采药去。只在此山中，云深不知处”（Under the pine tree I asked the lad/ Where his master had gone./ “To pick medicinal herbs/ He said he had gone./” “He’s simply in this very mountain out/ In the depths of clouds/ His whereabouts are not known.”）。［
