  Thenovelisrichinpoetry,symbolismandmetaphor.Itdoesnotfiteasilyintoadefinitepattern,beingneitheranovelof"manners"inthetraditionofAusten,orastraightforwardGothicRomanceinthestyleofMrsRadcliffe.WhatCharlotteBrontedidwastocreateaworkwhichcleverlyblendselementsofthetwostyles,andwhichremainsuniquelyindependentofthematthesametime,sinceitaddressesissueswhichwereatthetimerathercontroversial.

  Thenoveliswritteninthefirstperson,andthusmagnifiesthecentralcharacter-thereaderenterstheworldofJaneEyreandistransportedthroughherexperiencesatfirsthand.Thisatoncemakestheworksubjective,especiallysinceweknowthatCharlottesBrontesownlifeandexperiencesweresocloselyinterwovenwiththeheroine's.AswellasthiswelearnonlyattheendofthenovelthattheeventsarebeingrelatedtoustenyearsafterthereconciliationwithRochester-thusthenarrativeisRETROSPECTIVE(lookingback).CBiscleverinblendingthenarrativesothatattimesJaneseemstobespeakingasanadultwithadulthindsight,whileatothersshesheis"inthemiddle"ofthem,asachildoryoungwoman.Theindecisionwhichisacentralissueinthebook,isheightenedbythisdevice.Weneverknow,asreaders,whethertobeentirelytrustfulofJanesactionsandthoughts,becauseweareneversurewhehersheisspeakingimpulsivelyormaturely.

  Thisintensifiesthereadersdilemmaastowhatis"right"and"wrong"inthedramaticrelationshipswhicharepartofJE'slife.Canwebelievewhattheheroinesays,orisshedeceivingherself?Thenovelisprimarilyalovestoryanda"romance"wherewishescometruebutonlyaftertrialsandsuffering.Thesupernaturalhasitsplace,asdodreams,portentsandprophesies.Theheroinebeginspoorandlonelyandendsuprichandloved;theorphanfindsagoodfamilytoreplacethewickedone;allthebasicingredientsofclassicromanticfairytalearepresent.

  TheromanticelementispresentintwoformsinJaneEyre;the"family"aspectisdealtwithintheGateshead,LowoodandMoorHouseepisodes,whichinvolvetheexchangingofthewickedReedfamilyforthebenevolentRiversone;andtheLoveromanceisdealtwithintheThornfieldandFerndeanepisodes.Bothaspectsare,ofcourselinkedandinterwoventhroughoutthenovel.

  Thereisalsoastrongelementofrealisminthenovel,which,marriedtotheromanticaspect,enhancesthenovel'sstrength.Thesenseofplaceisverystrong;weareabletoexperiencebothexteriorandinteriorsettingswithstartlingclaritythroughoutthestory,inaseriesofvividdeivepassages.Thecentralcharactersarealsorealisticandtheirconfrontationsandsufferingschangetheminabelievableway.

  Eventheunlikelyismadeplausible,withauniqueblendofhighdramaandperceptivelowcomedy(theattackonMason,forinstance)

  Themorefantasticromanticaspects;thecoincidences;thesecrets;thesupernaturaloccurrences,arebalancedbytherealism,andthisisofcourseamajorstrength.

  TheGothicinfluencecannotbeignored,althoughCBhasrefinedthetechniqueconsiderablyfromthe"authentic"Gothicofthe1790's.Intheoriginalgenre,theheroinewouldtypicallybeabductedandthreatenedwithseduction,orworse!.Therewouldbealover-arespectable,well-bredyoungman-whowouldendeavortorescuetheheroineandwouldsucceedaftermanytrial.theseducerwouldbeabrigand"KnowthatIadoreCorsairs!"andhewouldlockthegirlupinaremotecastle.

  TherewaslittlefreedomformiddleclasswomenduringtheperiodoftheGothicnovel,andthiswasstillthecaseinthetimeofCB.Marriageespeciallywasoftenabargain,wherebyfortunesweresecuredbyusingthefemaleasapawn.Awoman'svaluelargelydependedthereforeonhersexualpurityandshewasguardedandsecuredasaresult.Men,onthecontrary,werepotentandfree;loversandmistresseswerecommon.Ironicallythewomenwhoprovidedtheirservicesweresocialoutcastsasaresult.

  InJaneEyreweseeelementsoftheGothicromance,inthatThornfieldHallandRochesteraredescribedverymuchinthebrigand/castlestyleBUTJaneEyreisnotabductedbyR.Onthecontraryshechoosestogothereofherownfreewill.ANDsheisclearinherdeterminationtohaveRochesterasahusband.Neitheristhereagentlemanrescuer;StJohnRiversmaylooklikeaGreekGod,butheisneitherkindnorbenevolent;drivingJanebacktoFerndean,notrescuingherfromit.

  ThetrialswhichtheheroissupposedtoundergoinaGothicromanceareinfactundergonebytheheroineinJaneEyre.ThebanditRochesterisonlyskin-deep.Underneaththebroodingexteriorisasensitivesoul,whichaWOMANfrees.InthiswayweseethatCBcreatedratheradaringdeparturefromconventionalfiction,althoughtherearestillmanyaspectsofthenovelwhichremaintruetoVictorianconvention.

  JaneEyre,isapoorbutaspiring,smallinbodybuthugeinsoul,obscurebutself-respectinggirl.Afterweclosethecoversofthebook,afterhavingalongjourneyofthespirit,JaneEyre,amarvelousfigure,hasleftussomuchtorecallandtothink:

  Werememberhergoodness:forsomeonewholostarmsandblindedineyes,forsomeonewhodespisedherforherordinariness,andevenforsomeonewhohadhurtherdeeplyinthepast.

  Werememberherpursuitofjustice.It’slikeacompanionwiththegoodness.Butstill,avirtuouspersonshouldpromotethegoodnessononesideandmustcheckthebadnessontheotherside.

  Werememberherself-respectandtheclearsituationonequality.Inheropinion,everyoneisthesameattheGod’sfeet.Thoughtherearedifferencesinstatus、inpropertyandalsoinappearance,butallthehumanbeingareequalinpersonality.

  Wealsorememberherstrivingforlife,hertoughnessandherconfidence…

  Whenwethinkofthisgirl,whatshegaveuswasnotaprettyfaceoratranscendenttemperamentthatmakeusadmiredeeply,butahugecharmofherpersonality.

  Actually,shewasn’tpretty,andofcourse,theordinaryappearancedidn’tmakeothersfeelgoodofher,evenherownauntfeltdisgustedwithit.Andsomeotherseventhoughtthatshewaseasytolookdownonandtotease,sowhenMissIngrammetJaneEyre,sheseemedquitecontemptuous,forthatshewasobviouslymuchmoreprettierthan‘theplainanduglygoverness’.Butasthelittlegovernesshadsaid:‘Doyouthink,becauseIampoor,obscure,plain,andlittle,Iamsoullessandheartless?Youthinkwrong!’ThisistheideaofequalityinJaneEyre’smind.Godhadn’tgivenherbeautyandwealth,butinstead,Godgaveherakindmindandathinkingbrain.Herideaofequalityandself-respectimpressussomuchandletusfeelthepowerinsideherbody.

  Inmymind,thoughaperson’sbeautyonthefacecanmakeothersoncefeelthatoneisattractiveandcharming,ifhisorhermindisn’tthesamebeautifulastheappearance,suchasbeautycannotlastfor,whenothersfindthatthebeautywhichhadcharmedthemwasonlyafalsity,it’snottrue,theywilllikethepersonnomore.Foralongtime,onlyaperson’sGREatvirtue,anoblesoul,abeautifulheartcanbecalledasANEVERLASTINGBEAUTY,justasKahillGibranhassaid,that‘Beautyisaheartenflamedandasoulenchanted’.Icanfeelthathowbeautyreallyis,asweareallfleshlymen,sowecan’tdistinguishwhetheramanisofnoblenessorhumbleness,butfleshlymen,sowecan’tdistinguishwhetheramanisofnoblenessorhumbleness,butastherearegreatdifferencesinoursouls,andfromthat,wecanknowthatwhetheramanisnobleorordinary,andevenobscure,thatis,whetherheisbeautifulornot.
