TheICDhaditsoriginintheWorldConferencefortheWellbeingofChildreninGeneva,Switzerlandin1925.ItisnotclearastowhyJune1waschosenastheICD:onetheoryhasitthattheChineseconsul-generalinSanFrancisco(USA)gatheredanumberofChineseorphanstocelebratetheDragonBoatFestivalin1925,whichhappenedtobeonJune1thatyear,andalsocoincidedwiththeconferenceinGeneva.
June1hassincebeenobservedastheICDbynumerouscountries,especiallybyCommunistcountries;intheWesternworldtheICDisusuallycelebratedonotherdaysoftheyear(ifatall),andthereisoftenlittlepublicawarenessaboutthesecelebrations.(SeethesectiononGermanybelowforfurtherdiscussions.)
ConsequentlythereissometimesamisperceptionthatJune1astheICDwasaCommunistinvention.Nonetheless,inrecentyearsevensomegroupswithintheUnitedStatesstartedobservingtheICDonJune1.
